The mango project of SAVE FOOD Initiative in Kenya will be five years old next fall. It had overcome multiple challenges and reached important milestones and achievements during this period.
Thanks to the financial commitment of European industrial companies and their technical advice, africon GmbH for their project management throughout the whole period and not to forget the great support of Messe Düsseldorf, Azuri Health Ltd. has managed to open a new production facility to produce dried mangoes in Kenya.
This has not only reduced mango food losses but has also created 23 new jobs and generated a sustainable source of income for farmers in rural Kenya. Those farmers have been also trained in crop and harvest practices to raise the awareness of healthy farming. Last and foremost, the project was able to lay the foundation for another investment for the local company Azuri Health, in which they are currently preparing intensively for the export of its products.
After almost 5 years, an independent analysis of the success factors and the possibilities of transferability of the project was carried out in cooperation with the ISM Dortmund. These results were presented at the SAVE FOOD conference as part of the IPACK IMA in Milan on May 30, 2018, by Sonja Mattfeld partner of africon GmbH, who initiated and led the project from day one.
